Just as I mentioned that a high school basketball coach couldn't make up her mind about staying in coaching or going, she leaves. We're talking about Alina Cunningham. She quit as coach of the King girl's basketball team. She had the right to quit. But don't do it a couple of weeks before the season starts. The girls can officially practice on Nov. 10, a Monday. I think the timing was off. It would've been O.K. to quit over the summer. And I asked Cunningham over the summer if she made up her mind. Not yet she told me. She was burned out. Baloney. Then she might get back into it after a year. Cunningham has some kids that take up her time as well. I can understand wanting to be home at night. Cunningham can attend her husband John's games. He coaches at Milwaukee Madison. Plus, John needs a break from his team getting the stuffing beat out of them by his wife's former team. She says Ken Williams over at Tech wants her to take over for him. He should've left coaching two years ago. Cunningham played for him in the late 1980's.

I am set to do a series of articles on some of the North Division's hall of fame inductees. The introductory article will come out in the paper next week. It will explain how committee chairman James Smith and others got together and created the hall of fame dinner. He wants more people, especially North grads who care about their school to help keep the Blue Devil spirit going. The hall of fame is a start of honoring past athletes and preserving the school tradition, despite the bad rap it gets from the news media. The late Jimmy Johnson, Howard Fuller, Derrel Wilkerson, Harry Oden and Washington Guyton will be featured, so check it out. I can't wait to bring out the profiles of each person.
